SCHOLARSHIP OPENS UP FOR STUDENTS IN NAMAQUA

September 2024.

The Globeleq Scholarship Fund (GSF) has launched its 2025 academic year intake, offering opportunities for students residing within a 50km radius of Konkoonsies Solar Power. This initiative targets the communities of Pofadder, Onseepkans, and Pella, continuing the Fund’s mission to support Black youth and foster education in these areas.

For the past 10 years, the GSF has enabled numerous students from these communities to pursue their tertiary education goals. One such beneficiary, a 25-year-old from Pofadder who completed a Bachelor of Commerce in Law from Boston City College in 2022, shared, “The bursary meant I could pursue my dream of studying law. For my family, it demonstrates that despite our circumstances, we can achieve success and become who we aspire to be.”

The Fund aims to empower young people to take advantage of educational opportunities, ultimately contributing to their communities by enhancing the local skills pool. “This education fund plays a vital role in supporting 100% Black youth, with a focus on women beneficiaries from these communities. It is actively contributing to the country’s transformation agenda,” said Hlengiwe Radebe, Economic Development Director for Globeleq South Africa Management Services and Konkoonsies Solar Power.

The GSF adopts a holistic approach to funding, considering not only academic achievement but also financial need, location, and gender. This ensures a focus on increasing the representation of women in engineering and other critical fields. Bursary recipients receive comprehensive support, including tuition fees, travel and accommodation costs, book allowances, and a stipend.

Note: Students from within local communities in the Northern Cape can apply to one of three categories, all funded directly by Konkoonsies Solar Power. The GSF Engineering Sciences bursary, open to all students nationwide, pursuing an engineering-related qualification full-time in 2025; the GSF Other Sciences bursary, available to students from (born or living in) the Northern Cape province pursuing one of the following qualifications full-time in 2025: Education (Mathematics and Science), Agriculture, Nursing; and the GSF Communities bursary, which supports students living in communities within 50km of the solar plant, pursuing any tertiary qualification in 2025.

The deadline for applications is 31 October 2024. The bursary is available for degrees, certificates, or TVET college courses. To apply, visit http://globeleq.auraams.app/.
